The ladies’ second match on 22nd May was a home match against Parsons Green. We played on the grass courts which despite appearances played well, with only a handful of interesting bounces. Despite our home advantage, we lost 16 - 8, which is exactly the same score as our first match. Hopefully, under the calm captaincy of Veena who is now taking over, the team will improve on these slightly disappointing results.
The team was Debbie + Vivien, liz + Berty, Veena + Anna
Thanks to all who gave their valuable time to help clean up the tennis hut and surroundings on Saturday last, and especially: Bertie and Kevin (with enthusiastic help from some younger players!), who repainted the hut; Nan and Huw, who cleaned out and reordered the inside of the hut; Fiona and Robert C, who mercilessly ended the short lives of the weeds around the court; Rudi for rebuilding the strimmer and demonstrating the graceful art of strimming; Huw and Peter C who cleared up the years of rubbish which had collected around the hut; and Mike N who replaced the glass in the hut doors with laminated safety glass. Well done, and an NPL Drinking Voucher to all of you!
We had a difficult evening for our first match at the David Lloyd Club, Heston on 15th May. After filling in a form each at reception, and a 15 minute wait, we were let into the bar area, where we were left waiting again. By the time we got on court, it was getting close to the ‘no-show-take-first-round’ time. In fact, we did claim the first round, despite pressure from D-L, as it was getting on for 7:00 when we started. As play began, it was clear we were playing a strong team and the final score was a 16-8 loss for us.
The team was Debbie Chawner + Vivien Raine, Anne Moore + Liz Savage. Veena Owen + Berty Clayton.
The Men’s seconds began the season in dismal style with a 22-2 defeat away to Gunnersbury Triangle IV. This is proving to be a bogey fixture as last year we played there in the opening round and lost 20-4. Our only set came from first pair Ian Lloyd and Bob Carson. Things can only get better!
NPL III beat Esporta Chiswick 14 : 10 to post their first win of the season.
Notable successes were the 3rd pair beating their 1st pair 6- 3 and the usual steady displays from the 1st & 2nd pairings
Could have been better if the 1st team didn’t have to finish their final game off on a dimly lit clay court.
The next team session is on Monday 19th May at 6.45 for 7.00 pm.
